What's the issue in Louisiana?

Louisiana’s cannabis laws are some of the harshest and most out-of-step in the country. Despite growing support for reform, state policy still treats simple possession as a criminal issue rather than a public health or civil rights matter.

People are still being arrested. Lives are still being disrupted. Families are still being pulled apart, not for violent crimes, but for having a plant in their pocket.

Louisiana's existing medical cannabis program is heavily restricted and often out of reach for those who need it most. At the same time, the criminalization of recreational use continues to disproportionately affect low-income communities and Black residents.

This isn’t just a legal issue, it’s a human one. Every arrest carries a cost: missed work, lost housing, suspended licenses, and a permanent record. Meanwhile, neighboring states are moving forward with full legalization and reaping the benefits in tax revenue, job creation, and criminal justice reform.

Cannabis reform in Louisiana isn’t about making it easier to get high — it’s about making the law make sense. It's about public safety, personal freedom, and economic potential.
